Archers in Action: News & Events ~ October 22, 2025

Families,

Sitting in a volleyball game a few weeks ago, I became aware that one of our sixth-grade students has been regularly attending science lectures at UT Austin–on Friday nights. Additionally, a group of high school students, over summer break, attended the Austin Institute’s Human Meaning and the Moral Life high school seminar,  and another group attended the University of Austin’s Life of the Mind Summer Edition, where they studied Great Books. This delights me for two reasons. One is that it indicates a deep love of learning that goes beyond the syllabus of a classroom. We want our students to be filled with wonder, and attending a science lecture on a Friday night, or attending a seminar on the Great Books during the summer, shows that students are learning because they wonder and love understanding. The second reason for my delight is that our mission, to train the minds and improve the hearts of young men and women through a rigorous classical education in the liberal arts and sciences with instruction in good character and civic virtue, is a lifelong endeavor, one that is not complete upon graduation. It would be tragic if a student graduated, left this community, and never read another text, never visited another museum, never listened to a good podcast. Students who are pursuing wisdom, dwelling on the true, good, and beautiful, outside of the requirements of the classroom, are demonstrating the understanding that education–formation toward virtue–is for life.

I encourage you to give your students opportunities to learn more, to pursue their academic interests beyond the school day, and to watch you learn and grow. Such actions will plant seeds that lead to a life of wonder and formation. And, in case you want to attend the next Hot Science–Cool Talks science lecture, here is the link!
